Terms of Service
Last updated: August 20, 2026
By installing or using Friction Observatory / Checkout Friction Observatory (“the app”, “we”, “our”), you agree to these Terms. If you use the app on behalf of a company or client, you confirm you are authorized to bind that party.
The service
The app provides automated synthetic monitoring of Shopify storefront checkout flows (product → cart → checkout presentation). It may include scheduled audits, multi-market and device checks, health scores, reports, PDFs, share links, optional Slack and email alerts, and — on Agency — a Client stores portfolio, peer comparisons, and white-label client branding. Features depend on your plan (trial, Pro, or Agency).
Accounts & authorization
- You must have a valid Shopify store and permission to install apps on it.
- Only monitor stores you own or are explicitly authorized to audit (for example, as an agency working for a client who installed the app on their shop).
- Each Shopify shop installs the app separately. Agency portfolio features do not replace the need for a proper install and authorization on each client shop.
- You are responsible for credentials and secrets you store in the app (such as storefront passwords and Slack webhooks).
Acceptable use
- Do not use the app to complete real purchases or capture payment credentials.
- Do not abuse rate limits, attempt to disrupt Shopify or third-party services, or reverse-engineer the service beyond normal use.
- Do not submit unlawful, infringing, or misleading content in brand assets, reports, or share links.
- Respect Shopify’s API, theme, and Partner terms, and applicable law.
- Do not use monitoring results to harass others or to make false public claims about a store you are not authorized to represent.
How audits work (and their limits)
- Audits are best-effort bot journeys. Themes, apps, bot protection, passwords, inventory, and network conditions can cause misses or false alarms.
- Health scores, fix checklists, and revenue-at-risk figures are estimates, not guarantees of conversion, uptime, or financial outcomes.
- Alerts (including Slack) may be delayed, filtered, or skipped when our systems classify a failure as monitor-side (for example proxy or bot block) rather than a store fault.
- Session videos and screenshots are evidence of the synthetic run; retention is limited and files may expire or be cleaned up.
Billing & plans
- Paid plans (Pro and Agency) are billed exclusively through Shopify Billing. Charges appear on the shop’s Shopify invoice. We do not store your card details.
- The free Trial plan includes five lifetime manual checkout tests and excludes paid-only features (such as automatic schedules, extra markets, and premium reports).
- When you approve Pro or Agency, Shopify may grant a 14-day billing trial before the shop is charged. During that unpaid window you get 30 checkout tests total (not per day) and no automatic schedule. Unlimited runs and scheduling start when Shopify begins charging a live (non-test) subscription. Test charges that Shopify never invoices stay on the 30-test cap.
- Each test is one synthetic run for a market × device × product URL (and journey, when enabled). Limits may change; the in-app quota and these Terms as then published control.
- Upgrades, downgrades, and cancellations are initiated in the app and confirmed in Shopify Admin where required. Downgrading or cancelling may immediately remove plan features (for example Agency portfolio and white-label tools).
- Prices shown in the app may change; Shopify’s charge confirmation controls what you are billed.
- Uninstalling the app or cancelling the subscription may end paid access; remaining trial limits (if any) follow our then-current trial rules.
Share links & Agency branding
If you create share links or white-label PDFs, you control who receives them and how brand assets are used. You are responsible for ensuring you have rights to any logo or brand name you upload, and for not exposing sensitive internal findings beyond people who should see them.
Intellectual property
We retain rights to the app, its software, and our trademarks. You retain rights to your storefront, brand assets, and content you provide. You grant us a limited license to use that content solely to operate the service for you (for example rendering reports and Agency-branded PDFs).
Privacy
Our Privacy Policy describes how we handle merchant and app data. By using the app you also acknowledge that policy.
Disclaimers
THE SERVICE IS PROVIDED “AS IS” AND “AS AVAILABLE.” TO THE MAXIMUM EXTENT PERMITTED BY LAW, WE DISCLAIM WARRANTIES OF MERCHANTABILITY, FITNESS FOR A PARTICULAR PURPOSE, AND NON-INFRINGEMENT. We do not warrant that audits will detect every checkout issue or that the service will be uninterrupted or error-free.
Limitation of liability
TO THE MAXIMUM EXTENT PERMITTED BY LAW, WE ARE NOT LIABLE FOR INDIRECT, INCIDENTAL, SPECIAL, CONSEQUENTIAL, OR LOST-PROFITS DAMAGES, OR FOR LOST DATA, ARISING FROM YOUR USE OF THE APP. OUR TOTAL LIABILITY FOR CLAIMS RELATING TO THE SERVICE IS LIMITED TO THE AMOUNTS YOU PAID FOR THE APP THROUGH SHOPIFY BILLING IN THE THREE (3) MONTHS BEFORE THE CLAIM (OR USD $0 IF YOU ARE ON A FREE TRIAL).
Suspension & termination
We may suspend or terminate access if you violate these Terms, if required by Shopify or law, or to protect the service. You may stop using the app at any time by uninstalling it and/or cancelling your subscription in Shopify.
Changes
We may update these Terms as the product or billing model changes. The “Last updated” date will change when we do. Continued use after an update constitutes acceptance of the revised Terms.
